Mae Jemison was born in Decatur, Illinois and raised in Chicago. She is an American astronaut and physician. She was the first African-American woman to go into space. She served on the Space Shuttle Endeavour as a mission specialist during the STS-47 mission in 1992. She has also been a science educator and an advocate for STEM education.
