Mae Jemison is an engineer and astronaut who was the first African American woman to travel into space. She was born in Decatur, Alabama, in 1956, and she studied chemical engineering at Stanford University. In 1987, she was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA, and she became the first African American woman to travel into space in 1992. Jemison has also worked as a medical doctor and a professor.
