Margaret Beckett is the longest-serving Labour MP, having first been elected in 1974. She is also the only sitting MP who served in the Labour governments of the 1970s, under Harold Wilson and James Callaghan. Beckett held several ministerial positions in these governments, including Secretary of State for Education and Science, and Foreign Secretary.
