Maharana Pratap was a Rajput king of Mewar who led the Rajput resistance against Mughal expansion in the 16th century. His father, Udai Singh II, had been defeated by the Mughal emperor Akbar in 1568 and forced to flee to the hills. Pratap succeeded his father in 1572 and vowed to continue the fight against the Mughals. The Mughals were a powerful empire that had conquered much of India.
