Mahmoud Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, was first elected as President of the Palestinian National Authority on 9 January 2005. He was re-elected in 2009 and 2013. Abbas is a member of the Fatah party and has been a key figure in the Palestinian struggle for independence for many years.
