Mahmoud Abbas got involved in Palestinian politics in the 1970s, when he became a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). He was a close ally of Yasser Arafat and served as his deputy from 1993 to 2004. Abbas was elected president of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) in 2005. He has since led a series of unsuccessful peace talks with Israel.
