Mahmoud Abbas succeeded Yasser Arafat as President of the Palestinian National Authority. Abbas was a longtime ally of Arafat and served as his prime minister from 2003 to 2004. After Arafat's death in 2004, Abbas was elected president by the Palestinian Legislative Council. He has since served as president for two terms, and is currently the longest-serving president of the Palestinian National Authority.
