Maithripala Sirisena was elected as the 7th President of Sri Lanka in 2015. He defeated the incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa, ending Rajapaksa's ten-year rule. Sirisena's victory was seen as a major upset, as Rajapaksa was widely expected to win.
