In May 2007, Malalai Joya was suspended from the Afghan Parliament due to her outspoken criticism of fellow lawmakers and government officials. She had accused some of her colleagues of corruption and warlordism, and had also spoken out against the presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan. Joya's suspension was condemned by human rights groups and some Western governments, who saw it as an attack on freedom of speech.
