Biology. Eugen Goldstein, a German physicist, introduced the term "canal rays," which later came to be known as cathode rays. These were streams of positive ions in a discharge tube. Wilhelm Wien's experiments further characterized these rays, and in 1898, Joseph John Thomson showed that cathode rays consist of negatively charged particles.
