Shot down, Richthofen's death resulted from a bullet wound to the chest inflicted by Canadian fighter pilot Arthur Roy Brown. Brown's Sopwith Camel fired a burst of machine gun fire at Richthofen's Fokker Dr.1 triplane, striking him in the heart and causing him to crash-land in a field near Vaux-sur-Somme, France.
