John VIII Palaiologos was the Byzantine emperor from 1425 until his death in 1448. He was the son of Manuel II Palaiologos and Helena Dragaš. John VIII was a capable ruler, but he faced many challenges during his reign. The Ottoman Turks were expanding rapidly, and John VIII was unable to stop them from conquering much of the Byzantine Empire.
