He is a Russian former professional tennis player who was ranked as high as world No. 1 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) for a total of 9 weeks in 2000 and 2001. Safin won two Grand Slam singles titles, the 2000 US Open and the 2005 Australian Open.
