Marcian was the Eastern Roman Emperor from 450 to 457. He was born in Thrace, and his father was a senator. Marcian rose through the ranks of the Roman military, and he was eventually appointed as the commander of the Eastern Roman army. After the death of Emperor Theodosius II, Marcian was proclaimed emperor by the army.
