Gastone Nencini was the last Italian to win the Tour de France before Marco Pantani. He won the race in 1960, becoming the first Italian to do so since Fausto Coppi in 1952. Nencini was a talented climber and a strong time trialist, and he was able to overcome a number of setbacks during the race, including a crash in the first stage and a puncture in the final stage.
