Brian Kelly, who had been head coach at Notre Dame since 2010, left the school to coach at LSU after the 2020 season. The school then hired Marcus Freeman, who had been the defensive coordinator at Cincinnati, to be their new head coach. Freeman's first season at Notre Dame was in 2021.
