Barnard College is an affiliated college of Columbia University in Manhattan, New York City. It was founded in 1889 as a women's college, and became coeducational in 1983. The college is named for its benefactor, Columbia University president Frederick Barnard. Mead received her bachelor's degree from Barnard in 1923.
