In 1916, Margaret Sanger organized the first birth control clinic staffed by all-female doctors in New York City. The clinic was shut down by the police after only a few days, but Sanger continued her work to promote birth control. In 1921, she founded the American Birth Control League (which later became Planned Parenthood).
