Maria I of Portugal, also known as Maria the Pious, was born on 17 December 1734 in Lisbon. She was the daughter of King João V and Queen Maria Ana of Austria. Maria I ascended to the throne of Portugal in 1777 and ruled until her death in 1816. She was known for her piety and her devotion to the Catholic Church.
