Maria I, also known as the Pious, was Queen of Portugal from 24 February 1777 until her death in 1816. She was the second daughter of King Joseph I and Queen Maria Anna of Austria. Maria I's reign was marked by her attempts to reform the Portuguese government and economy, and by her support for the arts and sciences. She was also known for her devotion to the Catholic Church.
