The first monarch of Brazil was Maria I, who was also the queen of Portugal. She ruled Brazil from 1815 to 1822, when her son, Pedro I, declared independence from Portugal. Maria I was a mentally ill woman who was unable to rule effectively, and Pedro I took over many of her duties.
