After Charles X abdicated, Louis Philippe I succeeded him to the throne of France. Louis Philippe was a member of the House of Orléans, a cadet branch of the House of Bourbon. He had been living in exile in Britain during the Bourbon Restoration, but returned to France after the July Revolution of 1830.
