Marin Mersenne died on 1 September 1648 at the age of 50. He was a French mathematician, philosopher, theologian, and music theorist. He is best known for his work on Theory of sound and for his correspondence with some of the leading scientists and philosophers of his day, including René Descartes, Blaise Pascal, and Galileo Galilei.
