Marina Tsvetaeva, a Russian poet, escaped to Paris in 1922 with her husband Sergei Efron and daughter Ariadna. She was initially welcomed by the Russian émigré community in the city, but her relationship with the other émigrés quickly soured. She was critical of the Russian émigré community, which she saw as bourgeois and conservative. She also felt isolated from the French literary community.
