Mário Soares held the position of Prime Minister of Portugal from 1983 to 1985. He was the first Socialist Prime Minister of Portugal and his government introduced many reforms, including the privatization of state-owned enterprises and the liberalization of the economy. Soares also played a key role in the negotiations that led to Portugal's entry into the European Economic Community in 1986.
