Mário Alberto Nobre Lopes Soares is the full name of the Portuguese politician and diplomat who was the 18th President of Portugal from 1986 to 1996 and the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1976 to 1978 and again from 1983 to 1985. He was a leading figure in the Portuguese Socialist Party and a key figure in the Carnation Revolution that overthrew the Estado Novo regime in 1974.
