Mário Soares was the first Secretary-General of the Portuguese Socialist Party, which was founded in 1973. The party was formed in opposition to the dictatorship of António de Oliveira Salazar and was instrumental in the country's transition to democracy in the 1970s. Soares served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1976 to 1978 and from 1983 to 1985, and was President of Portugal from 1986 to 1996.
