Oliphant was mentored by Ernest Rutherford at the University of Cambridge. Rutherford was a Nobel Prize winner in physics and one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century. He is credited with discovering the nucleus of the atom and with developing Theory of nuclear fission. Oliphant was inspired by Rutherford's work and went on to make significant contributions to the field of nuclear physics himself.
