What's the "Brodeur rule" in the NHL?

  • Restricted celebrating after goals

  • Restricted goal scoring for goalies

  • Restricted puck handling for goaltenders

  • Restricted overtime play for goaltenders

Answer

The Brodeur rule, also known as the trapezoid rule, is an ice hockey rule that restricts the amount of time a goaltender can play the puck outside of his crease. The rule was introduced in the 2005–06 NHL season in an effort to increase scoring and speed up the game.
