In 1518, Martin Bucer annulled his monastic vows and left the monastery. He had joined the monastery in 1506, and had been ordained a priest in 1515. However, he had become increasingly dissatisfied with the life of a monk, and felt that he could do more for the church by working outside of the monastery.
