The tau lepton is an elementary particle in the Standard Model of particle physics. It is the third and last lepton to be discovered, after the electron and muon. It is also the heaviest of the leptons, with a mass around 3,500 times that of the electron. The tau lepton was discovered in 1975 by Martin Perl and his colleagues at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
