He is best known for his work in film and theater, including the scores for The Way We Were (1973), A Chorus Line (1975), and Sophie's Choice (1982). He won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for The Way We Were and two Tony Awards for Best Original Score for A Chorus Line and They're Playing Our Song.
