Answer
James, Duke of York was the father of Mary II, the joint ruler of England, Scotland, and Ireland with her husband, William III. He was a member of the House of Stuart and was the second surviving son of King Charles I. James was raised a Protestant, but later converted to Catholicism, which led to his exclusion from the succession to the throne.
