British anthropologist and archaeologist Mary Leakey was born in London, England, in 1913. She was the wife of Louis Leakey and the mother of Richard Leakey. Mary Leakey's most famous discovery was the fossilized remains of Zinjanthropus boisei, an early hominid, at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania in 1959. She also discovered the remains of Homo habilis, another early hominid, at Olduvai Gorge in 1960.
