In 2013, Maharaj took his first Test hat-trick against West Indies at Durban. In the second innings, Maharaj bowled four consecutive balls that were all wickets, getting rid of Sunil Narine, Narsingh Deonarine, Kemar Roach and Shane Shillingford. Maharaj was the third South African to take a Test hat-trick, after Makhaya Ntini and Dale Steyn.
