Before becoming involved in politics, Rama played basketball professionally for the Albanian club Partizani Tirana. He was a point guard and was known for his speed and dribbling skills. He played for Partizani for six seasons and helped the team win the Albanian Basketball Championship three times. After retiring from professional basketball, Rama turned his attention to politics and was elected as the mayor of Tirana in 2000.
