Van Dyck spent most of his time in Genoa, Italy from 1621-1627. He painted portraits of many of the noble families in the city and his works are considered to be some of the finest examples of Baroque portraiture. During his time in Genoa, Van Dyck also met the painter Peter Paul Rubens, who had a significant influence on his work.
