Matías Almeyda spent most of his playing career at River Plate and in Italy. He made his debut for River Plate in 1993 and went on to play for the club for six seasons, winning three league titles and one Copa Libertadores. In 1999, he moved to Italy to play for Lazio, where he won the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana.
