After 1098, Matilda regained many of her lost domains. This was due to the death of her husband, William the Conqueror, in 1087, and the subsequent accession of her son, William Rufus, to the English throne. William Rufus was more favorable to his mother than his father had been, and he restored many of the lands that had been confiscated from her.
