Perry returned to Japan 8 months after the convention, having departed from the United States in November 1853 and arriving in Japan in July 1854. His mission was to negotiate a trade agreement with Japan, which had previously been closed off to foreign trade. The resulting Treaty of Kanagawa, signed on March 31, 1854, opened two Japanese ports to American ships and established diplomatic relations between the two countries.
