Answer

Van Diemen's Land was the original name given to the island of Tasmania. The name was bestowed by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642, in honor of Anthony van Diemen, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies at the time. The name was used until 1856, when it was officially changed to Tasmania in honor of the Dutch explorer himself.
