On 29 April 1464, Matthias Corvinus was crowned with the Holy Crown of Hungary, becoming the King of Hungary and Croatia. Matthias was the son of János Hunyadi, a Hungarian nobleman and military leader who had been instrumental in defeating the Ottoman Turks at the Battle of Belgrade in 1456.
