Between 1482 and 1487, Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary and Croatia, occupied the region of Lower Austria. Matthias had been a strong ally of Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor, but the two men fell out after Frederick refused to allow Matthias to inherit the Austrian throne. Matthias then invaded Austria and captured Vienna in 1485. He remained in control of Lower Austria until his death in 1490.
