Matthias was the son of John Hunyadi, a Hungarian military leader who had defeated the Ottoman Turks at the Battle of Belgrade in 1456. Ladislaus was the son of Ladislaus V, who had died in 1457. After Ladislaus V's death, Matthias was declared king of Hungary, but he was only 15 years old and was not able to rule effectively.
