Maud of Wales (1061-1119) was known for her philanthropy. She was the daughter of King Henry I of England and his mistress Edith the Fair, and she married the Welsh Prince Gruffudd ap Llywelyn. After Gruffudd's death, she became a nun and founded the abbey of Whitland in Pembrokeshire. She is remembered for her generosity to the poor and for her support of religious institutions.
