Mauno Koivisto was the first president of Finland from the Social Democratic Party. He was elected in 1982 and served until 1994. During his presidency, Koivisto oversaw the end of the Cold War and the reunification of Germany. He also played a key role in the establishment of the European Union. Koivisto was a popular president and is considered one of the most successful in Finnish history.
