Mauno Koivisto was the ninth president of Finland, serving from 1982 to 1994. He was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Finland and a veteran of the Finnish Civil War. Koivisto's presidency was marked by the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. He was succeeded by Martti Ahtisaari.
