Meknes, the capital of Morocco, was surrounded by walls built by Moulay Ismail, the Sultan of Morocco from 1672 to 1727. The walls were built to protect the city from attack and were more than forty kilometers long. They were also very strong and difficult to breach. The walls were built of stone and were topped with a parapet.
