John Walsh, a Democrat, succeeded Max Baucus as a United States Senator representing Montana. Baucus retired in 2014 after 36 years in the Senate. Walsh was appointed by Governor Steve Bullock to temporarily fill the vacancy until a special election could be held. He served in the Senate from January 2014 until January 2015. Walsh was defeated in the special election by Republican Steve Daines.
