Max Euwe, born in 1901, was a Dutch chess grandmaster and the fifth World Chess Champion. A prodigious talent, Euwe won the Dutch Chess Championship at the age of 14 and became a world-class player in his early twenties. He famously defeated Alexander Alekhine in 1935 to win the World Championship but lost the rematch the following year.
